THE POET TAKES ALL MORNING<\/p>\n
The poet takes all morning to wake up sometimes\u00e2\u20ac\u201d
\nSometimes days\u00e2\u20ac\u201dsometimes weeks.
\nThe poet eats too fast and asks for seconds.
\nThe poet doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know what he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s on about
\nBut he knows there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a word for it.<\/p>\n
The poet doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t care
\nIf I make any money,
\nIf I eat things that are bad for me.
\nThe poet believes that anything
\nWorth doing badly is worth describing well.
\nThe poet wishes we would move to Italy,
\nThat Death was Beauty, and Beauty, Truth.<\/p>\n
The poet wants to throw a party
\nAnd invite his dreams,
\nThen go home with someone else.
\nThe poet believes in Blakes\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s God and Milton\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Satan
\nBut can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t sit still for the pew religion\u00e2\u20ac\u201d
\nHe doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t understand why the hymns have to be so bad,
\nWhy the sermon is never interesting,
\nWhy no one weeps at communion.
\nThe poet falls in love with every woman he meets
\nAnd loses them because he falls in love with every woman he meets.
\nThe poet lies awake all night
\nWatching the dying animal sleep.<\/p>\n
I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m a novelist, I complain to him\u00e2\u20ac\u201d
\nI don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have time for these endless moments.
\nThe poet says I need a break from the words marching all the way to the right margin and back again trying to make something happen, never just letting time stop to be here now.
\nMaybe, I say.<\/p>\n
The poet takes all morning to wake up sometimes.
\nSometimes he wakes up right away.
\nThe poet laments there are more hours in the day
\nThan there are things to do them.
\nThe poet rides in the backseat asking,
\nAre we there yet? Are we there yet?
\nAnd before you know it, of course we are.
